Bifocals vs varifocals – everything you should know

Do I need reading glasses? This is a question that many people face when it comes to reaching the age of 40 years. Almost every person needs some form of reading aid at some point in their life. The reason for this is a condition called Presbyopia. This is when the intraocular lens in the human eye ages and becomes tight and rigid which results in you no longer being able to focus so nicely close. This is a normal condition that accompanies the normal ageing process.

No matter how old or healthy you are, regular eye tests by an eye doctor or optometrist are essential, not only to determine the quality of your vision but also to look at the overall health of your eyes.

Do I Need An Eye Test?

There is a reason why people need to wear glasses and a proper eye test usually indicates the refractive status of the eyes. The refractive status (in other words, whether you are near or far-sighted or have astigmatism) is again determined by various other factors, such as the length of the eye, the curve of the cornea, and the curve of the eye’s lens.

Some people are privileged and need only reading glasses, but for others, they come to the realisation that both their distance vision and near vision are no longer sufficient. It is then for this reason that they feel compelled to purchase combined glasses (near-sighted and far-sighted).

Conventional vision glasses can help, but for different purposes, lenses of different types such as Bifocals should be used. This is not always easy, and for some people, it results also in significant waste. Fortunately, science has found a way out of this situation, combining what was intended for an opposite goal. As a result, bifocal lenses were invented more than 100 years ago.

What Are Bifocal Lenses?

Bifocal lenses are basically two different lenses combined into one, but many people find the line that divides the two lenses disturbing. Fortunately, technology has improved significantly over the last 100 years since bifocals were first introduced, and nowadays we have far more advanced products available on the market.

Do I Have Other Options?

Yes, with advances in technology an opportunity also arose to make better lenses that included a seamless transition, which makes bifocals obsolete in a sense and today, we have more innovative lenses known as multifocal (or varifocal) lenses. A multifocal lens changes in strength from top to bottom to allow good vision at different distances.

Fortunately, when it comes to frames, there is a myriad of choices and with a lens prescription by a registered optometrist or eye doctor, you can buy them anywhere – even online!

At The Glasses Company, we have a great selection of prescription varifocal lenses that are available from our online platform and you can save up to 65% when you shop online with us.
